Targer Audience Decided

After doing some research on Bauer Media and other websites (such as UK Tribes), we have decided to change our target audience from 16-34 into 13-25 because younger teenagers and younger adults stereotypically like listening to Pop genre songs and they like new things, whereas older people likes to listen to traditional foreign countries. Our secondary research has backed up these stereotypes.

When conducting our research we found out that teenagers and young adults spend on average about 31 hours a week on social networking sites and the internet, so we thought the best place to advertise our music video and reach our target audience would be on different sites from the internet such as Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Spotify and YouTube. Our target audience tend to be more sociable people as they spend more time talking to friends on-line and playing music at the same time. Also when we interviewed people from our target audience, we found that they were more sociable people as they spent a lot of their free time on social networking sites, and that they enjoyed a large variety of music even if they didn't listen to the same genre all the time.

We would target our audience by using adverts and posters down the side of their Facebook/ Twitter/ Skype and YouTube homepage, and we would make the poster appeal to them by showing the main protagonist in the video. We could use generic conventions such as having bright colours as they would expect to see this kind of stuff in pop genre. However, we might as well challenge the generic conventions to make it stand out from the other pop music posters.

Another area that we could advertise our adverts for our music video would be on television on certain channels that our target audience would be more likely to watch. When we conducted our research we found out that teenagers would more likely watch music channels for example Viva or 4Music instead of TV show, as they tend to be more sociable people who enjoying keeping up to date with fashion trends and the latest music out. Young adults also like to watch music channels but also like to watch the soaps on an evening, so the best place to advertise on the TV to target all our target audience would be on music channels.

Another area would be advertising our front cover posters on magazines such as Pop because a lot of teenagers are reading it as they want to know the latest gossips about celebrities, latest fashion trends and beauty products.

We could also advertise it on certain apps because a lot of people use their phones, tablets, pc's and other electronic device. Therefore, they would be able to notice it and also they can download it straight to their electronic devices.

Target Audience Member Profile

Alice is on the left, I'm in the centre and Rye is on the right side.

I have interviewed two of my friends and their names are Alice Hare and Rye Dela Cruz. I have chosen them as one of my target audience because I am aiming for mainly teenagers and both of them likes Pop music which is the genre that I am doing for our music video. I have asked both of them a few questions based on pop music, music videos and their hobbies so it would give me ideas on what I could add on our music video. These are the answers that they gave back to me:

What Pop music do you like? Why?
Alice - I like dance pop music because it's so catchy and mostly have a good beat to dance to, and so good for parties
Rye  - I like the new songs that has come out recently because it has a good beat. Sometimes I can relate on the lyrics.

What do you want to see in Pop music video? Why?

Alice - Fun, dancing, booze and just a massive party. Maybe like a boat party because we're teenagers, we want to have fun, and we don't want to listen to music that is boring and watch a boring video.
Rye - A couple with their friends in a beach party and dancing. The female looks naturally pretty and the male is handsome. Also the singer artist's is riding on a nice sports car because they look nice to look at. They amuse me and don’t look boring to look at.

What don't you want to see in a Pop music video? Why?

Alice - Boring stuff like no fun or just something plain and boring because it takes away my good mood.
Rye - When there is too much people within the video because it distracts the main singer but also to the people who is watching it.

What is you favourite Pop music? Why?

Alice - It's called Remedy by Professor Green because it's a great song, it's a party song the video is amazing, and all you want to do is dance when you see it.
Rye - Payphone by Maroon 5 because it is a nice song to listen to and the singer is has a nice voice.

Other than Pop music, what is your favourite genre of music? Why?

Alice - RnB and Musical Theatre because RnB is party music and musical theatre is what I do, and I love musicals.
Rye - Hip Hop because it is catchy and upbeat which makes me want to dance to.

What is your favourite music video? Why?

Alice - Remedy by Professor Green because it's a party and fun there’s always something to watch and it's just a crazy good time.
Rye - What Makes You beautiful by One Direction because the band members are having fun of spending time with their colleagues which amuses me.

What are your hobbies? Why?

Alice - Theatre because I love doing it and listening to the songs that are on charts. Sometimes seeing friends and going on parties.
Rye - Computer, chat, listening to music and going on Facebook, watching basketball tournament because it is one of my favourite sports.

What is your favourite artist?

Alice - For Pop music its Beyonce but also other people that are in the charts. For musical theatre is Idina Menzel.
Rye - Maroon 5 and Jim Brickman

Which artist's do you look up to? Why?

Alice - Idina Menzel because she is just a musical theatre legend and Beyonce because she is such a role model to all young girls as she's such a strong woman.
Rye - Maroon 5 because they have a nice voice and nice songs that they are making.

What Pop lyrics mean most to you? Why?

Alice - "Oh god, maybe for good" from Wicked because it reminds me about someone close to me that died
Rye - "Baby, you light up my world like nobody else" by One Direction because it reminds of someone I used to love.

Conclusion:

After doing this questionnaire, I am going to try and include some of their ideas in our music video. For example, use the beach for the location as it will portray the female artist to think more on the decisions that she is going to make. And maybe, show the female artist and her ex-boyfriend past memories such as going to parties together and hang out with their friends.

Target Audience Considerations

Our music video is initially aimed at the age from 16 to 34 yrs old. However, it is open to other people who enjoy listening to 'Pop' music. It can also be someone who is broken-hearted and the relationship is not good because our music video is about that. We took into consideration both demographics and psychographics because they helps us who we are aiming for but also why they would like it. And this is what Rachael and I have decided:

Demographics
Age - aimed at 16 to 34 to years old.
Gender - mainly targeted at female but open to male as well.
Ethnicity - it doesn't really matter
Social Class - Upper social class (A, B, C1)

Psychographics

Attitudes - gossiping, going out with friends on the weekends, media literate, smart, passionate, loyalty, conscious

Interests - shopping, beauty products and latest fashion trends, celebrity gossips, modern mainstreams

Opinions - they keep up with the new fashion trends, they care about their face and body, and they would give opinions to other people and listen to what others are saying

Target Audience Research

We have been researching on two different media industries as it would give our group an idea on where and how we would promote our music video to the right audiences.

Bauer Media
This is the first media industry that we have looked at. This is about different types of audiences from different brands of magazines, radio, TV mobile and on-line. After doing some research on Bauer Media for our target audience, I took a few screen shots on which we are aiming and what type of audience they are.

UK Tribes
I have researched on another website called the UK Tribes for my target audience. This is mainly about young people's lives, their media, their aspirations and their brand preferences. Also it is about the expression of young people's attitudes and affiliations. I have looked into this website to get an idea on where and how to aim for our target audience because our primary audience is mainly for young teenagers.

Conclusion:
Overall, I have learnt who and what type of audiences they would be for different brands of magazines, radio, TV, on-line, etc. Moreover, I found out that they are aiming at the same sort of target audience. Pop is the genre that we have chosen to do for our music video and this fitted in most of the brands that we have looked at. This media industry has helped our group to narrow down and decide the audience we are aiming for. The brands are all well known and most of the teenagers use these sites which helped us where we should advertise our music video. Also I have learnt how people consume media through different platforms and this helped our group on what is the best place and what time for advertising our music video.

Annotating the lyrics

We have annotated the lyrics of song so we know what we wanted to do throughout the music video. This will help our group to organise the locations, props and equipment needed for different areas in our video. My group and I have discussed the ideas that all of us had in our minds and then decide which ones are suitable for our music video.

This is a presentation of the lyrics that our group has annotated:

The Pitch & Feedback

This video is when Rachael and I pitched our concept and ideas in front of the whole. This will help us on how we could improve or change the ideas we have got.

After the pitch, we received different feedback from different students and also the teacher. The feedback that we got were:

  • What editing should we us
For editing, we're thinking to have slow fades when its slow tempo and fast fades when it is fast tempo so it matches to the song. And it will also make the audience feel sympathy for her. When the female artist is going through all her old memories in the photo album, we will use dissolves to signify as all of her memories are fading away.

  • Do we have a female lead
We haven't chosen a female lead yet but we have some people that we could use as the female lead. They are good at acting and have done GCSE Drama so we can rely on them. We can't think of the final narrative just yet but we some ideas in mind. This people also easy to get in contact with as they go to the same school as us and doesn't live far.

  • What is the narrative of our music video
Our idea is about how the female is leaving the past behind her and moving on after the break up with her ex-boyfriend. She then realise how stupid she was to love him and move on about it all by herself. Our idea is about how the female is leaving the past behind her and moving on after the break up with her ex-boyfriend. She then realise how stupid she was to love him and move on about it all by herself.

  • What camera shots and techniques do we use
We make sure that the audience will focus more on the female singer by using close up shots to show her emotions and nothing is in the way that distracts the audience eyes. We might use tracking shots when she is walking in a street or path to make the audience follow at her movements throughout the video. And use long shots to show her body gestures to show to the audience how she is acting with the situation she is in. We might use an establishing shot of the location so  the audience know where it is set in.

  • Do we have some ideas on where to shoot our music video
We are planning to shoot in an abandoned streets or parks or somewhere that it is isolated as it matches the concept of the story.

Additional Ideas

This is a presentation on different ideas that we would like to include for our chosen song.

Asking the Artist's Permission

This is a screenshot that shows I have asked the artist's permission on recreating her "on My Own" music video. I sent it on Friday but still hasn't got a response from her.

We hope they would reply to our letter soon. Even if we do not hear a response from them, we will still use this song for our music video. However if they does contact us and telling us that we don't have the right to use the song, we will find another song and start all over again.

Generic Conventions of Romance

These are the generic conventions of romance genre:
Romance Genre Conventions
Romance is the theme of our music video because this is one of the generic conventions in pop music videos. The narrative of our video is to show between the past and present of the female being happy and melancholic with her ex.

This is a screenshot where we portrayed the female as being depressed and melancholic as she is broken hearted and she wants to isolate herself from everyone. We used white gown and white bedroom because we want it to reflect on the female's innocence and purity. It also makes our music video formal and professionally done.

We have used hairbrush and mirror because this is essential to every teenage girls. Also we want to portray her as she isn't different from any other girl which makes the audience to identify themselves in her. Her body gesture also implies that she is thinking on the reason why her ex left her because of her appearance and maybe she needs to do something about it.

We have used the park as we want to portray her being missing her ex so she goes to the places where they used to go out with her ex. And this is stereotypically what teenage girls do when they can't move on with their past boyfriends. Also we used this because it is the type of location where the couples would normally go for hang outs and dates.

We have used a party scene because this is what stereotypically teenage do when they want to have fun ro get rid of their problems. We have used teenagers on this because it helps on aiming our main target audience and they will be able to identify themselves on this scene.

We have used a male and female on our music video because it is one of the generic conventions of Pop. We have used the spotlight on the couple as we want the audience to focus at them more and so it creates an enigma to the audience. For example, they might think that the male character is going to propose on the female.

We have used connotations on props/locations/characters as we want our audience to identify the situation easily. For example, the red curtains and sofa connotes as love. This makes the audience know that this music video is mainly about love/romance. The orchids at the windowsill makes the audience think that this is what her ex gave to her.

We have used the egg timer instead of a clock because we don't want our music video to look too modern. The slow paced of sand falling on the bottom also makes the audience feel that time passes really slow.

We have used black and white effect as it matches her sad/melancholic emotions. It also implies that the dull colours helps to show how are female character is feeling because she hasn't got the one that she loves.

Overall, we have used and met the generic conventions of romance as we want the audience to identify her situation easily.
