Additional music video ideas

We decided to change the narrative of our music video a little bit as we want to make it clearer to the audience on what mistakes she has made. We thought that if we would use another male character and then the female artist's is flirting with him then she doesn't realise that her ex is stood on the side looking at the them. He then started to confront both of them and  push the other guy, the female tried to stop him and she walks off with the other guy and left him on his own. This is where he realised that her gf doesn't love her anymore so later on he decided to break up with her.

These are the examples of music videos that portrays our concept:

Conventions of Magazine Adverts

These are the conventions of Magazine Adverts:

  • Name of the artist
  • Release date
  • Brand identity
  • Website
  • Company logo
  • Name of the album
  • One of the song names
  • Tour dates
  • Magazine/ Newspaper rating
  • The shops where you can get them
  • "Follow us on...(Twitter, Facebook)

What is Brand Identity?

A brand identity symbolizes the company's values, services, ideas and personality. Record labels create a brand identity as a base to sell the artists music on. An artist needs a unique selling point in order to create a market for them in the music industry. It is a key to a successful business of any kind.  One of the most common logo that we recognise is Coca Cola. The logo and design of Coca Cola is so well-known and recognisable that Coca Cola even once put out an advert consisting purely of the red and white 'wave' that they were so confident on people recognising their brand, and it was a successful advert.

Building a brand identity neeeds a consistent use of the same logos, characters, designs and themes, and re-branding a company is a risky move that can often go wrong or have negative compact, for example in 2001 the Royal Mail re-branded themselves to 'Consignia' but quickly changed as it was so not liked with both the community and the companies employees.

Inspirational Digipak

Front Cover
This is one of the digipak that inspires me because I think it has covered the generic conventions of a pop digipak and it has targeted the audience they are aiming for which is what we want to accomplish in ours. The use of simple background and mid shot makes Madonna stands out even though she is placed on the side of the page which is what we are expecting to see this on a front cover of pop digipak. I like how they have used blue as their colour scheme and this is evident through the colour of top she is wearing and the colour of the background. Also the title is "Ray of Light" which matches the bright blue colours they have used as their colour scheme. The female looking straight towards the camera portrays that she is directing to the audience and it makes you buy the CD. Madonna stares directly at the camera also implies that she is mainly aiming to the male audience as she looks seductive and pretty which would attract the audience's eyes.

Inside Cover

The inside panel has got a booklet that contains track list  lyrics and some photos of the female artist which is what we would expect to see in a digipak. I like how they have got different poses of her inside the booklet which keeps the audience interested while they are reading thought the lyrics. I like how they have used white and simple font styles because it helps the audience to read the texts inside it. The bright blue colours grabs the audience's eyes and also it stays in their mind even though they are looking at different ones.

Back Cover
The back cover looks unique from any other pop digipaks as we normally expect to see a full shot of the artist or band members but this one isn't showing that and they on capture half of her body. This creates an enigma to the audience as they might think about what is the reason behind it? Or maybe they want the audience to focus on the clothes she is wearing and the background they have used because they have used too many close up and mid shots on the front cover and inside panels. I like how they have placed the bar code at the top instead of placing it at the bottom of the page where her dress is as it will just take away the main image. All the company logo and copyright information are really small at the bottom of the page because they are not that important. I like how they have placed the numbers on the right instead on the left because it makes their digipak look unique and interesting to look at.

Conclusion:
After looking through this digipak, it gives me some ideas on what we could have on our digipak as they have portrayed and used generic conventions of pop genre. For example, it would help us where and how we would place the female artist on our digipak. And how we are going to represent our female artist or what clothes would she needs to be wearing? I found out that we could use bright colours and a close up shot of the female artist as this would attract our target audience. The use of simple fonts and different font styles keeps the digipak interesting which is the type of font we could possibly use for our digipak.

What is Digipak?

This presentation is about what is a digipak and the key elements it has got. I have been doing some research on this in the internet as I want to have an idea on what to include in our digipak and how to structure it.

Train Station Risk Assessment

This is the risk assessment form that I have filled in for filming on train station. This is because we don't want to put the actors and our member's health at risk. Therefore, I have looked at the possible hazards and tried to minimise the risks that has been identified.

Filming Ideas

We have been researching on the internet about different music videos but mainly focusing on Pop genre so we could get some ideas and maybe use it in ours. One of the song we have found is called Gone by Nsync and it was released on 4th Septer 2001. It is Pop and RnB which is the type of genre that we are doing for our music video.  The narrative of this music video is mainly how the male character is being melancholic about her ex girlfriend left him and how he needs to accept the fact that she is gone. However, it also portrays happy past memories of him and her ex girlfriend by showing both of them on his ex girlfriend's birthday party. This has similiraties with our music video because we have decided  in our group to use some of the scenes such as parties.

This is a flashback of him and his ex girlfriend having a good time. As we can see on this scene, her eyes is looking at different direction which shows that she is smiling at his boyfriend. They took it in mid shot which helps the audience to identify the location. The female is wearing white top which reflects back to the type of character she is because white connotes as purity and innocence. As we can see there aren't any shadows on the background which implies that they took it during daytime which is kind of high key lighting. This also matches to the mood that the characters are in as they are having a good time.

This is a mid shot of Justin Timerlake which is the male character throughout the music video. As we can see, they have used black and white effect which reflects back to his emotions of being lonely and melancholic. They also filmed at a bedroom which portrays that this is the bed that they both slept on. The use of lighting is very effective as it is making shadows on the background which also relates back to the atmosphere he is in because he is feeling down and his world is like falling apart. The bed with the male character on his own emphasise him as being isolated from every one else as he does not want to talk to anyone about what he feels inside.

This is where they have introduced the band members of NSYNC and also show Justin Timberlake. They are all wearing black which implies that his ex might have died from accident and now he is grieving  because black connotes as death. Black also connotes as evil which implies that the male character is treating her bad and that is why his girlfriend left him and broke up with him. The male character on the left, looks down which implies that he is upset and lonely.

This is the scene where the male character used to paint his ex's nails which gives a romantic feelings to the audience especially on women. This is also high key lighting which matches to their lively mood. The male character is wearing white top matches his attitude because white connotes as purity and innocence.

This is a flashback during his ex's birthday party. The female putting some icing on the male's nose implies that she is making fun of him but at the same time she is being sweet. This is stereotypically what couple's would do to it each when their is icing. By portraying this scene, it makes their audience to identify themselves in that situation as they might have been through it as well. The use of mid shot is also showing the kitchen and their friends having fun with them.

These are close up shots of the male and female being happy during the party. The high key lighting also emphasises the atmosphere that they are both in. They have picked the right actor for the main characters because they are both good looking and excellent at expressings different emotions.

They have used generic conventions of romance as they have portrayed it on this scene. as we can see, the male is putting on a necklace around her neck which is stereotypically what a guy would buy for his girlfriend. They have used a hig key lighting as well on this one which matches to the couple's feelings.

This is also a flashback as part of the past memories that he has got with her. The use of mise-en-scene is very effective because it reflects back on the character's attitude. For example, at the end of the clip they have the couple wearing  white top which connotes as innoncence and purity. It implies that both of them are showing each other's real feelings and having fun being together. The use of long shot and mid shot also helps to establish the location and their facial expressions.

Conclusion:
Overall, I think that this video is good and they keep the audience insterested by having a good looking characters. Also the narrative of this music video is straight forward which is easy for the audience to understand. After looking at this, we decided as a group to have a party in ours but we are going to change it a little bit by having it in a club instead of house party. This is because most of the teenagers likes to go to the club more and it also helps to target our main audience. Also we have similiarities between our music videos as we have used the black effect in some parts of our music video so it portrays the times passing by and in this video they have used it throughout which matches the emotion of the male and the whole meaning of the song. In my opinion, we have mainly met the generic conventions of Pop such as using close up shots and mid shots more so it focuses on the characters feelings.

Font Ideas for our Music Video

These are the examples of different fonts that we thought we could use for the title of our music video. We decided as a group to have a simple font and a little bit fancy so it does not look boring to the audience eyes. Also it emphasize the female's innocence and natural character. We are going to put the font title at the beginning of the song so the audience knows what is the name of the song. The software that we have used in order to find different types of fonts is "Font Image Creator" then we used "Snipping Tool" to copy the font and save it onto our blog.

These are the examples of the font we have found:

These are examples of music videos that uses fonts/titles:

Overall:
The typography of music videos depends on the mood, style or genre of the song. For example, in pop music videos such as Who's That Chick by Rihanna, they have used colourful fonts which is one of the generic conventions of Pop. Also, they have used fancy fonts which matches the happy and lively atmosphere.

Job Roles

Research: Job Roles in Music Video

Producer
A producer is someone who manages the production from start to finish.  They have the full control on every aspect of the production bringing together the screenwriters, director, cast, finances and production team.

Director
The director is the driving creative force in a music video's production, and acts as the crucial link between the production, technical and creative teams. They are assisted by assistant directors who ensure that the director’s ambitions and achieved.

Camera Operator
The camera operator or cameraman is a professional operator of a film or video camera. They are responsible for physically operating the camera and maintaining composition and camera angles throughout a given scene or shot.

Job Roles in our Music Video

Producer
The producer in our music video is Rachael Halstead and Me because we are good at coordinating, supervising and controlling matters.  I think we are perfect for the job and we will make sure that everything runs smoothly. We are good at making ideas and share each others opinion.

Camera Operator
We have decided that I am going to be the camera operator because I know a lot about all the camera shots and techniques that we have been taught. I think I am responsible well enough for all aspects of camera operation, like to focus on lighting and overall visual style. I can ensure that the camera and equipments are prepared for the required set–ups, I always keeping alert for any last–minute changes. I can multi–task, and to watch, listen and think on my feet while carrying out complex technical tasks. I can suggest some improvements or alternatives.

Director
The director in our music video is going to be me because I am well organised, sensible, good memory and knows storyboarding well. I tell the actors what to do, ensures the sets are right, establishes the camera angles, controls the lighting and has a say in the editing. I am in total control outside administration things as well.

Alice is on the left, I'm in the centre and Rye is on the right side.

I have interviewed two of my friends and their names are Alice Hare and Rye Dela Cruz. I have chosen them as one of my target audience because I am aiming for mainly teenagers and both of them likes Pop music which is the genre that I am doing for our music video. I have asked both of them a few questions based on pop music, music videos and their hobbies so it would give me ideas on what I could add on our music video. These are the answers that they gave back to me:

What Pop music do you like? Why?
Alice - I like dance pop music because it's so catchy and mostly have a good beat to dance to, and so good for parties
Rye  - I like the new songs that has come out recently because it has a good beat. Sometimes I can relate on the lyrics.

What do you want to see in Pop music video? Why?

Alice - Fun, dancing, booze and just a massive party. Maybe like a boat party because we're teenagers, we want to have fun, and we don't want to listen to music that is boring and watch a boring video.
Rye - A couple with their friends in a beach party and dancing. The female looks naturally pretty and the male is handsome. Also the singer artist's is riding on a nice sports car because they look nice to look at. They amuse me and don’t look boring to look at.

What don't you want to see in a Pop music video? Why?

Alice - Boring stuff like no fun or just something plain and boring because it takes away my good mood.
Rye - When there is too much people within the video because it distracts the main singer but also to the people who is watching it.

What is you favourite Pop music? Why?

Alice - It's called Remedy by Professor Green because it's a great song, it's a party song the video is amazing, and all you want to do is dance when you see it.

Alice - "Oh god, maybe for good" from Wicked because it reminds me about someone close to me that died
Rye - "Baby, you light up my world like nobody else" by One Direction because it reminds of someone I used to love.

Conclusion:

After doing this questionnaire, I am going to try and include some of their ideas in our music video. For example, use the beach for the location as it will portray the female artist to think more on the decisions that she is going to make. And maybe, show the female artist and her ex-boyfriend past memories such as going to parties together and hang out with their friends.

Target Audience Considerations

Our music video is initially aimed at the age from 16 to 34 yrs old. However, it is open to other people who enjoy listening to 'Pop' music. It can also be someone who is broken-hearted and the relationship is not good because our music video is about that. We took into consideration both demographics and psychographics because they helps us who we are aiming for but also why they would like it. And this is what Rachael and I have decided:

Demographics
Age - aimed at 16 to 34 to years old.
Gender - mainly targeted at female but open to male as well.
Ethnicity - it doesn't really matter
Social Class - Upper social class (A, B, C1)

Psychographics

Attitudes - gossiping, going out with friends on the weekends, media literate, smart, passionate, loyalty, conscious

Interests - shopping, beauty products and latest fashion trends, celebrity gossips, modern mainstreams

Opinions - they keep up with the new fashion trends, they care about their face and body, and they would give opinions to other people and listen to what others are saying

Target Audience Research

We have been researching on two different media industries as it would give our group an idea on where and how we would promote our music video to the right audiences.

Bauer Media
This is the first media industry that we have looked at. This is about different types of audiences from different brands of magazines, radio, TV mobile and on-line. After doing some research on Bauer Media for our target audience, I took a few screen shots on which we are aiming and what type of audience they are.

UK Tribes
I have researched on another website called the UK Tribes for my target audience. This is mainly about young people's lives, their media, their aspirations and their brand preferences. Also it is about the expression of young people's attitudes and affiliations. I have looked into this website to get an idea on where and how to aim for our target audience because our primary audience is mainly for young teenagers.

Conclusion:
Overall, I have learnt who and what type of audiences they would be for different brands of magazines, radio, TV, on-line, etc. Moreover, I found out that they are aiming at the same sort of target audience. Pop is the genre that we have chosen to do for our music video and this fitted in most of the brands that we have looked at. This media industry has helped our group to narrow down and decide the audience we are aiming for. The brands are all well known and most of the teenagers use these sites which helped us where we should advertise our music video. Also I have learnt how people consume media through different platforms and this helped our group on what is the best place and what time for advertising our music video.
